A Season to Forget?

Sunday Oct 26th, 2008

Ending the season without a win is tough. Practicing every night for the last 2 months, and not achieving a win is also tough. Spending hours planning, scheming, teaching, coaching, executing and not being able to come away with a wing is tough. Was this a season to forget?

No. This was a season of firsts. That's the way I am going to remember it. First time coaching for me. Going ten years away from tackle football I sure did miss it!
First year as a head coach for Mead. I am sure he would have liked to come away with a win, but I know he doesn't regret the season or wish to forget it.
First TD for veteran receiver Jamey Marten. First time playing football for running back Kevin Sagno, and receiver Chris Ciporski. First time playing for many of our grade 10s. First reception for a lot of our receivers, first tackles for many of our defenders.

Sure I would have loved to come away with a win this season. But that doesn't mean this was a season to forget. I love football and I am sure a lot of our players love football. And the fact that they got to play and I got to coach it was great. I know for Coach Mead and myself this was the first step of many, with a goal or turning this program into a winning team with a winning attitude. And both he and I are committed to this team, and more broadly this program.

The Kodiaks finished the season in tough fashion playing perennial championship contenders St.Paul's Crusaders back to back.

In the last week of the regular season the Kodiaks were able to play every player on their bench. The outcome was not the result they were looking for, but it was nice to see that the players never gave up, and played with class the entire game. From the opening series it seemed that the Kodiaks were able to do nothing right. In a night were the Crusaders were able to throw at will, run at will, return kick-offs and punts for TDs, the Kodiaks struggled to finish there season without hanging their heads. As mentioned before the Kodiaks played with class and finished the game their heads held high.

Rookie players Ishan and David K. were able to get into the mix, making their first appearance on the field and each coming up with a tackle.

As mentioned before the Kodiaks saw the Crusaders again the following week. This time it was the first round of the play-offs. The Kodiaks came out defensively determing to stop the run. And they did. Probably the best run defense performance of the year. The Kodiaks' plan was; if the Crusaders were going to beat them, they were going to beat them through the air. Crusaders' QB Cobb had a game to remember. I am not positive of the game stats but Cobb was somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 for 15 with 4 or 5 or even 6 TD passes, and probably close to 300 yards. What a game.

Poor Kodiak DBs who were left in Man to Man coverage for the bulk of the game. As the Kodiak plan was again: to stop the run.

There was some great performances on the Kodiak side of the ball. Will Luciw, had an amazing game defensively. Making numerous tackles, some for losses, and all with one practices as middle linebacker. Kevin Sagno also had a great game; both running the ball and playing linebacker on Defense.

Players:
As coach Mead mentioned football teams are made in the off-season. So be sure to continue thinking about the game of football. See Mead for potential workout regimes. Listen to announcements for when we start our Saturday morning club, there will be of course a spring camp, and ask Mead or myself about a potential touch team in the spring and summer.

Thanks for the great season boys.

Oh So Close

Sunday Oct., 12th, 2008

The Kodiaks played their best game thus far. The offense moved the ball, the defense stopped the Clippers at times, and overall the Kodiaks were in the game right till the end.

The Kodiaks' first grade 10 starter, Dave Manderick, had a solid game at QB. Throwing for 220 yards, and running for another 15, he looked comfortable in the pocket showing nice touch passes to favorite target, and game star Chirs Ciporski. Kevin Sagno was able to bust a run for 70 yards and a touchdown, his longest run of the season, and for the second game in a row rushed for over 100 yards. That gives Kevin 215 yards in the last two games.

Jamey Marten hauled in his first TD catch as a Kodiak. Going over top of the defender, Marten went up aggressively for the ball and was not going to be denied his touchdown, fighting for the ball and scoring the game's second TD, giving the Kodiaks a 12 point lead at the time.

For the second week in a row it was the special teams that came up short in the loss. The Clippers managed two Kick-Off returns for touchdowns, and third was stopped by the kicker, Chris Ciporski.

The star of the game was without a doubt grade 11 starter Chris Ciporski. He had 4 receptions for 174 yards and a touchdown, 1 run for 15 yards, 1 kick-off return for 53 yards, and he punted it 6 times with a 34 yard average. His night started early when caught a 15 yard pass from QB Manderick, and then took off for 85 yards and a touchdown. He also had a reception for 55 yards in the second half.

The Kodiaks have a tough opponet coming up. Undefeated St.Paul's Crusaders will look to finish their season unbleshed for the second year in a row when they take on the Kodiaks Thursday. The Kodiaks on the other hand will look to finish their seson strong and try to upset the heavly favored Crusaders. Be sure to come out and cheer them on.

An Offensive Surge

Friday Oct. 3rd, 2008

It wasn't the outcome the Kodiaks were looking for in their home coming, but they were quite pleased with the yards the offense churned up.

Losing a tough match 34-14 to the offensively charged Grant Park Pirates was not the ending the Kodiaks had envisioned. However, the coaches were pleased to see the Kodiak offensive score some points, doing it by grinding out 233 yards on the ground, and adding another 65 yards through the air, it looks like the offensive has turned a corner.

The defense, coming off a poor showing against the Oak Park Raiders, had something to prove. They looked solid a times, forcing the Pirates on 2-and-outs on several occasions, but they also gave up some big plays. Newly positioned corner Aaron Ryan was welcomed to the defensive in grand style - with the assignment of covering the Pirates 6'1'' wide out. Ryan did his best having only 3 practices under his belt at Corner...

The real damage came at the feet of the Pirates' quarterback. The Kodiaks' defence seemed unable to stop the quaterback of the Pirates. Either if he decided to run the ball or throw the ball.

But of the three phases of our team it was the special team that let the team down. There was a blocked punt for a TD, a fumble on a Kick-off that gave the ball to the Pirates on the Kodiak 30 yard line. This turn over lead to another score. There was also several miss-played punts.

There were quite a few preformers during this week's game. Kyle Olewski ended the day with 133 yards rushing. Ever one of them earned. Kevin Sagno also had a great game, rushing for 100 yards. Anthony Enns looked good at times, and David M. stepped up nicely coming off the bench when Anthony went down.

The Kodiaks are going to get back at it this week and start their preparations for Kelvin.

Tough Times for the Kodiaks

Sunday Sep 28th, 2008

The defending WHSFL Champions took down the neophyte River East Kodiaks on Thursday 47-0, and the Raiders sure looked like a defending championship team.

The Kodiak defence wasn't able stop much, as the Raiders marched up and down the field every time they had the ball. The Raider punter was well rested, due to the fact that he didn't have to punt once.

The Kodiak offense had moments and flashes of success. They were able to drive the field more than once, but were unable to finish off their drives. Under their new look offense which featured a balance of a wishbone or three back offense, and a run and gun shotgun offence....

The offense was lead by veteran receiver Jamey Martin, who had a couple of receptions for 45 yards. They were also able to grind out the running attack behind some powerful runs by Kevin Sagno, who finished the day with 57 yards rushing.

At times Anthony Enns looked sharp hitting his men on the move nice crisp passes. And at other times he was hit hard while trying to make his reads. Back-up QB Dave Mandrick came in late in the fourth quarter to finish the game off.

Justin K and Jeff Peters lead the deffence in probably their worst outing of the year. It seemed that the Raiders were able to run and throw and will against the Kodiaks. The Kodiaks were starting rookie corner Troy Schellenburg who played well making a couple of tackles. However, his experience showed a little while his man caught the first TD of the game.

Special teams was highlighted Jordan De Merchant who was able to block not one but two converts. Not to be out done Cody Birston got his second blocked convert of the year.

The Kodiaks look ahead now to the Grant Park Pirates who come to River East for the homecoming game this Thursday at 5PM. Be sure to come out and support your Kodiaks and check out the festivities.

Another Tough Loss

Saturday September 20th, 2008

For the Kodiaks it was a game of missed assignments and lack of execution.

The Spartans' program is a good one. It has been good for along time. Sisler capitalized early and often on the Kodiaks' mistakes. Right from the opening kick-off (which sailed over our returners head) the Kodiaks' offence had a tough time finding a rhythm. After an early two and out the Kodiak defence was able to force the Sisler offence to a two and out. However the next time the Spartans got...

the ball they were able to connect on a nice 35 yard pass and run, that put the Spartans on the Kodiak 2 yard line. They scored and never looked back.

Quarterback Anthony Enns was able to hook-up with rookie Chad Posthumus early in the second quarter. Posthumus was among two rookies starting in the Kodiaks' backfield. Congratulations to Brendan Hosfield, who earned his first start, out at wide reciever. Terren Gierys was also able to get some playing time in Kodiak offence.

The Kodiaks' deffence was able to settle down after the shakey start. Besides the TD pass in the second quarter, they were able to bear down and hold the powerful Sisler offence to 2 FGs. And even scored a TD, after speedy linebacker Rob Ivecovic was able to strip the ball from the Sisler RB. From there, veteran Jordan DeMerchant scooped it up and had a spirited 30 yard run for the major.

The defense was motivated by several stand-out performances from players such as; Tommy McGuire who came up big to help stop the run, and rookie D lineman Jessie McKenzie with a couple of tackles for losses. There was also some tough play from our Warriors out there. Veteran O lineman and team leader Chad McCullough was playing with, get this: a bruised hand, sore shoulder, and then ended out taking a helmet in the bicep, he stilled toughed it out and finished the game. Veteran slotback Will Luciw was also banged up in several places, but that didn't stop him from having some hard fought runs, and a couple of catches.

Import rookie punter Rodrigo had another great game. He came up with a big hit on a kick-off return. He ran for an amazing 35yard run when the snap sailed over his head on a 3rd and 15 play. He didn't panic. He simply turned around scooped up the ball and sprinted down the sidelines for a first down.

The Kodiaks have a short week as they prepare for defending WHSFL champions Oak Park Raiders who they face on Thursday September 24th. Be sure to come out and help support the Kodiaks.

Peguis Bowl

Saturday September 13th, 2008

The Kodiaks come up a little short in a tough fought match.

The Miles Mac Buckeyes earned bragging rights for a year after defeating the Kodiaks in the second annual Peguis Bowl. In a close game (16-14) that went right down to the wire Kodiaks failed to play up to their ability and came up oh-so short in a disappointing loss...

With fans from both schools, painted-up and chanting it up in the stands, and the sun shinning brightly on the turf of the East Side Field, the Kodiaks' defence couldn't stop the Buckeyes when it counted, and the offensive couldn't put together a drive in the fourth.

Kodiaks had a great start to the game driving the field and scoring on their opening series. Put together by some great runs by Kevin Sagnon and capped-off with a awesome catch and run play by Kyle Oleksiw. On the issuing kick-off Rodrigo, the Kodiaks' import kicker sailed the kick-off through the end zone. And we're not talking about getting a good bounce here. The Kick-off finally came down on about the one yard line, then of course bounced through.

The Kodiaks' D also started off strong stopping the Buckeyes several times and holding them to zero in the first quarter. The Kodiaks seemed to come apart however near the end of the first quarter with a series of Objectionable Conduct calls forcing the Kodiaks back thirty yards and eventually having them to give up a safety.

Turns out that was the winning two points.

The Kodiaks came out strong in the third quarter motivated by the return of Kevin Sagnon they were able to dirve the field and score a TD to take the lead 14 - 9. But then it was the defence that couldn't stop the Buckeyes offensive as they drove the field with an impressive drive of counters and passes, caped-off with a touchdown pass on third down. The Kodiaks' defence was pretty pumped-up when corner Jeff Peters knocked down a pass on second and long. Thinking they had forced the Buckeyes to take a FG. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes went to the same play on third down and this time Peters got turned around and couldn't recover it time to swat the ball away, and watched helplessly as their receiver trotted in for the major.

It looked like the Kodiaks' offensive was going to get a good shot at going in for the winning score or at least be able to get it close enough for their phenom kicker to kick the winning FG, when the defence stopped the Buckeyes on first and second down on the Buckeyes' thirty; with four minutes to go. The Kodiaks' dream of going in for the score was dashed with a great coaching call from the Buckeyes. On third and 5 the Buckeyes pulled-off a fake punt for 20 yards. They were then able to drive the field and essentially kill the clock and hopes of a Kodiak come back.

The Kodiaks fall to 0-2 with two tough opponents comping up in the Sisler Spartens (2-0) followed by the defending champions Oakpark Raiders. Be sure to come out and cheer on your Kodiaks.

Season Kick-off

Saturday September 13th, 2008

The Kodiaks kicked off their 2008 season with a tough match against the Churchill Bulldogs.

On a muggy Thursday night, where mosquitoes were out in plenty, the Kodiaks tried their best to take on a very good Bulldog team. Shooting themselves in the foot right from the beginning the Kodiaks handed the Bulldogs the ball on Kodiak 3 yard line; when a long snap...

sailed over Rodrigo's head on a third down punt play.

The Kodiaks were able to hold the Bulldogs to 6 points in the first quarter. Overall the first half was a strong one by the young Kodiak team. However, another mental error took the wind out of their sails, when heading into half-time the Bulldogs connected on 80 yard pass and run to end the first half.

The experience of the Bulldogs took over in the second half as it seemed they were able to march the ball at will against the Kodiaks. The Kodiak offensive had flashes of brilliance with a couple of great tosses by rookie QB Anthony Enns, to upstart receiver Ben Chutta. But in the end were unable to score against a tough Bulldog defence.

Other highlights include a couple of great interceptions by both Tyler Perillo, and Jeff Peters.

In the end the Bulldogs were just too much for the Kodiaks, be sure to come and check their next game on Friday, September 12th against local rivals the Miles Mac Buckeyes.
